MidlothianSituated southeast of Edinburgh, lying between the Pentland and Moorfoot Hills, is the area that once included the city and was formerly known as Edinburghshire. As the city expanded its boundaries this area shrunk and now mostly lies outside of the A720 City Bypass. Four main roads pass through the area from Edinburgh into the Scottish Borders: the A68 and A7 to the southeast; and the A701 and A702 to the south. The A68 heads roughly southeast through Dalkeith and into the Borders at Soutra Mains. The A7 follows a more southerly route from where it leaves Edinburgh and enters the Borders just south of Tynehead. The A701 heads south, passing through Penicuik, where the A766 heads southwest to join the A702 while the A701 continues south into the Borders at Leadburn. The A702 heads southwest from Edinburgh, following closely to the Pentlands, entering the Borders at Carlops. Near Penicuik is the small village of Roslin, famous for Dolly, the cloned sheep, and Rosslyn Chapel. |
