Inner Hebrides - SkyeSkye is the largest island of the Inner Hebrides. The A830 Road to the Isles runs from Fort William to Mallaig where a ferry runs to Armadale. From Armadale the A851 runs north east, through the Sleat peninsula, following the coast to Isleornsay. It then turns north and joins the A87 near Broadford. From here the B8083 heads south west to Elgol on Loch Scavaig. The A87 runs from Invergarry (near Loch Oich in the Great Glen) to Kyle of Lochalsh where the Skye Bridge crosses over to the island. Sgurr na Coinnich can be seen clearly from Kyle of Lochalsh. The bridge crosses Kyle Akin, the strait that separates Skye from the mainland at Kyle of Lochalsh. Eilean Ban is the island under the bridge. This had been a toll bridge until December 2004. One of the many arguments against this toll was the levy would have been illegal under the terms of the 1707 Treaty of Union. The A87 continues from the bridge and heads north west following the coast as far as Sligachan. It then heads north through Portree and up to Uig. The A855 runs from Portree round the coast of the Trotternish, the northern peninsula, to Uig. The Old Man of Storr is a pinnacle on the ridge of Storr. From Sligachan the A863 heads west and then heads north west to Bracadale and on to Dunvegan. Dunvegan Castle is the seat of the MacLeod clan. MacLeod's Tables, south west of Dunvegan, are two basalt and lava hills - Healabhal Mhor and Healabhal Beag. At Bracadale the B885 heads north east to Portree. North of Portree the A850 heads north west along Loch Snizort Beag and then roughly west to Dunvegan. Throughout much of the island the jagged peaks of the Cuillin Hills can be seen. The Talisker Distillery, at Carbost on the shore of Loch Harport, was founded in 1830 by Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill from Eigg. |
